We’ve all heard the saying “out with the old and in with the new.” Well, March 2 is National Old Stuff Day and this is the perfect day to put this saying into practice.
Keep reading to learn what this National Old Stuff Day is all about, as well as some fun ways to celebrate this day.
Whether you want to declutter your old stuff, or find a new appreciation for it, this day is for you!

What is National Old Stuff Day?
This is a day devoted to having a look around your home and life in general to see what things you no longer need in your life.
It’s a day to de-clutter your home, your life and your mind. Have a look at my post for organizing your home for some ideas.
The thoughts for today go towards getting rid of off stuff and trying something new. Not ALL the old stuff, of course, but those items that have outlived their usefulness.
The most obvious things to start with are the general clutter items and things stored in boxes of at the back of closets that haven’t seen the light of day in years.
The day is not just about clutter though. Sometimes we get stuck in old routines and do the same thing over and over because it feels familiar.
How about taking a new walk to work or school this week? Maybe try out a new recipe or two?
What about the value of old stuff?
Not all old stuff is clutter. Some items, such as antiques, books and even Match Box Toys appreciate in value over time.
Instead of focusing on getting rid of old stuff, how about thinking of National Old Stuff Day as a day to appreciate the old.
Perhaps visit a consignment shop or antique shop to see what old treasures you might find that you want to collect for future?
You may even find that you have some hidden treasures in your home right now!
How to observe National Old Stuff Day
There are lots of obvious ways to celebrate National Old Stuff day. Here are a few other creative ideas to help honor this day.
- Head to the attic, basement or storage area to find out what you don’t need in your life any longer.
- Instead of throwing something away, put it to a new use. Got some old clay pots? Turn them into a Leprechaun hat centerpiece in just a few hours.
- Spend the day with your old relatives to try and find out something new about them. (My favorite way to celebrate the day.)

- If you are a bit of a hoarder, try reading the book Tidying up with Marie Kondo. It’s a great book about de-cluttering.
- Your trash might be someone else’s treasure. Fill a box and donate it to charity.
- Do the word search puzzle for March to see if you can find Old Stuff Day in it.
- Put pen to paper and practice the lost art of sending handwritten letters to someone you love.
- Give your bookcase a good once over. It can be organized, too!
- Give your old item a new lease on life with a new paint job or spruce up. I re-used some old craft items in a new way on my front door to change the look for spring with a St. Patrick’s Day door swag.
- Try a new hair cut. This is one of the things that always gives me a boost.
- Send off a letter to a pen pal.
- Use the hashtag #NationalOldStuffDay to spread the word about the day on social media.
