Learn more about the month of June

June is the sixth month of the year in our calendar and gets us close to the half way mark.

In the Northern Hemisphere, it is the beginning of summer with the longest day of sunshine in the year. It’s a time for exploring what the great outdoor has to offer.

In the Southern hemisphere June is the opposite – it’s associated with winter and the fewest daylight hours.

Fun facts about June

The month of June has arrived and with it the start of our warm weather, so let’s catch up with a few facts about the first full month of summer.

The name of the month comes from the Latin word Junius.  One thought about the origin of the month is that it is associated with Juno the goddess of marriage and the wife of Jupiter, the goddess of spring and growth. There are several other theories about the name of the month as well.

June is National Aquarium Month, which is apt, since many people visit them during summer holidays. It is also National Fruit and Vegetables Month, National Camping Month and National Great Outdoors Month, among others.

But don’t stop with just these activities, with all the upcoming fun and offbeat holidays, there is more than just outdoor eating and living to celebrate this month.

  • The birthstone for the month of June is the pearl.
  • June’s flower is the Rose
  • Gemini and Cancer are the Zodiac signs with Gemini up to the 20th of the month and Cancer starting on the 21st.
  • This month is not called June everywhere.  It’s juni in Danish, guigno in Italian and juin in French. Each language has its own spelling.
  • England’s tennis tournament called Wimbledon is held in June each year.
  • June is thought of as the month to get married.

The list below features the National Days of June, day by day. Some of these days have links to pages on my site where you can find more information about that interesting national day.

I add to this page often with new links and fun facts about your favorite national day, so be sure to check back often for new ideas.

June national monthly observances

It is also National DJ Month, National PTSD Awareness Month and National Salsa Month.

But don’t stop with these activities. There are so many more things to honor.
