National Burrito Day – 1st Thursday in April – Try These Burrito Recipes

The first Thursday in April is observed each year as National Burrito Day. I doubt that anyone needs an excuse to try a burrito recipe, but if you do, today’s the day! 

This national day is your opportunity to sample one of America’s favorite Tex Mex meals with a choice of dozens of tasty burrito recipes.

April is a month full of national days devoted to all sorts of food. Check out the full list of April national food days here.

Burritos are a delicious Mexican concoction that features a tortilla that is wrapped around a tasty combination of meat, cheese, tomatoes, rice, vegetables, beans and sauce. 

The meat is normally shredded but I’ve also made burritos with ground meat as well as chunks of meat.

The combination is popular at fast food restaurants. For another fast food day, check out McDonald’s day on April 15.

Beef, chicken, and pork are commonly used to make burritos, but the sky is the limit with protein choices, or go for a meatless version and highlight the beans instead.

I love to use cumin and chili powder as spices to give my burritos a smokey and spicy flavor. All sorts of beans can be used from black beans to refried beans.

This tasty national day is full of the influence from our Mexican neighbors.   • Did you know there is a Dictionary of Mexicanisms? The word “burrito” first appeared in it in 1895!
  • The traditional food of the City of Juarez in Northern Mexico is the burrito.
  • Burrito means “little donkey” in Spanish.
  • Chimichangas are burritos that have been deep fried for a crispy taste and texture.
  • Compared to the USA creations, burritos made in Mexico are normally thin and made with just one or two ingredients!
  • One of the first burritos was made in the USA in 1930 at the El Cholo Spanish Café in Los Angeles, CA.
  • Many restaurants offer free burritos on National Burrito Day. Be sure to check to see if your local Tex Mex spot does.

If you ask around your office for the best recipe for burritos, I guarantee you that you will get dozens of opinions. Should burritos have rice or does rice make them bland?
